James Patterson

While reading the aforementioned Thomas Harris, I decided to pick up another, similar writer who I am so far enjoying very much: James Patterson.  Right now I am reading his The 19th Christmas, which very skillfully walks a fine line between thriller and comedy.  A great, great mystery novel in the fashion of those of us library-types who like mystery novels!  I could easily read every word the man has written, and I just might.  Patterson wrote the novel which was the basis for the (I thought) terrific film Along Came a Spider, which I saw but forgot to review.  Great stuff!  My retirement is shaping up nicely!

Hannibal and Clarice

I'm almost done with Thomas Harris's Hannibal, which I'm happy to say is a great book that is taking my reading habits in some interesting new directions.  I have a lot of respect for Thomas Harris, especially his way with characters such as of course Hannibal and also Clarice Starling.  These are great, classic characters, some of the best ever.  I eagerly await CBS' Clarice series that is soon coming out, where we will finally get to see more media on Clarice Starling (and from the looks of things, in the vein of Jodie Foster).  Check them out!

The Card Counter

Did anyone catch that news article that said that Martin Scorsese helped direct Paul Schrader's The Card Counter?  It's interesting that now there are those secret Scorsese films (the other is Badge 373).  I wonder if it will have his distinctive style.  Does anyone else plan to see these films?

The Shutter Island series

Ever notice that Shutter Island and Salt both feature a character named Ted?  I did, and I'm not always sure it is a coincidence.  The whole thing, the Seth MacFarlane Ted films included, plays like a video game, where you try to pin down the character's origins and relationships to other films.  It left me with this list of my favorite of those films and the other films that it makes me think of:

1. Monty Python and the Holy Grail
2. Psycho 1998
3. Casino
4. Shutter Island
5. Salt
6. Hugo
7. Alone in the Dark (very underrated, plays just like an epic videogame)
8. Inland Empire
9. The Transformers series

What did everyone else have?  What did you think?

Is Scorsese retiring?  I never though I would celebrate it like this......

The Hannibal series

I just rewatched the Hannibal series on DVD, and am currently rereading the books.  While I would not put them up there with Scorsese, they are a great series of movies and books.  Even Manhunter, while it initially might seem a little dated, really is a great movie with atmospheric white interior and nighttime visuals.  Red Dragon is equally good, the whole thing looking like a living room, and The Silence of the Lambs has similar strengths, has the best performances, and all around is the best by far.  I even like Hannibal, different though it is, and Hannibal Rising, which in some ways features Hannibal at his most active and fatal.  A great, great and underappreciated series.  Check them out!
